Uganda made a poor start to the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, losing 3-1 to Tunisia at the Stade Olympique Annex in Rabat.
A double from man of the match Elias Achouri and a goal from Ellyes Skhiri were enough to hand the Carthage Eagles a deserved win under heavy rains.
Denis Omedi pulled one back late in the game but how did each of the players in Cranes colours fare?
Salim Magoola 5.0: Made two good saves in the second half to keep the score line respectable. His distribution in the lead-up to the second goal was poor but he could do nothing to stop the goals conceded.
Tobby Sibbick 6.0: Arguably Cranes’ best player going forward. Confident on the ball and was never afraid to take on opponents. Assisted Cranes’ only goal with a clever cutback.
Aziz Kayondo 5.0: One of the toughest games in national team colours against brace hero Achouri who also had support from the right back Valery. Booked early on.
Jordan Obita 5.0: Had the most touches; 82 more than any player on the pitch. Consistently tried playing out from the back.
Rogers Torach 4.5: Preferred ahead of Mukundane in the absence of Capradossi. Neat and tidy on the ball but defended poorly, especially on the second goal.
Khalid Aucho 4.0: His poor pass was intercepted in the buildup to Tunisia’s second goal and often looked uncomfortable under pressure. Faced a good challenge in Hannibal Mejbri and Ferjan Sassi.
Kenneth Ssemakula 4.0: He lost Skhiri, who headed home the opener and was overrun by the industrious Mejbri in the centre of the pack.
Melyvn Lorenzen 3.0: Rightly substituted at halftime—a willing worker who had no end product.
Rogers Mato 5.0: A quiet day for Cranes’ main man in attack but still had a good opportunity in the first half well defended.
Steven Mukwala 4.0: He lacked service but when he got the opportunity in the second half, he sent his shot way wide off the mark. Replaced by James Bogere.
Jude Ssemugabi 3.0: Like Lorenzen, he had a torrid night and was rightly replaced at halftime.
Substitutes
Travis Mutyaba 5.0: He was an improvement on Lorenzen. Never afraid to take on opponents but always subdued physically.
Denis Omedi 5.0: Got the consolation for Cranes but overall, the performance was average.
Al Hassan Baba 4.0: Replaced Kenneth Ssemakula midway the second half and immediately got booked, completed 12 of his attempted 12 passes.
James Bogere 4.0: History for the 17-year-old who came on for Mukwala but not much to change the game.
Allan Okello 5.0: Came on late in the game but was involved in the build-up to the Cranes’ consolation.
