Vipers SC assumed leadership of the pile in the Uganda Premier League after overcoming Mbarara City FC on Tuesday at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The Venoms who have been playing catch-up since the start of the season, eventually claimed top spot with a 2-0 victory against the Ankole Lions.
Allan Okello and Abdu Karim Watambala scored a goal each for Vipers to secure maximum points.
Mbarara City had put up a spirited fight, especially in the first half but their resolve was finally broken when Okello opened the scoring, five minutes before the break.
Okello tucked home from the spot after Milton Karisa was brought down in the area by goalkeeper Fahad Emuron.
Five minutes after recess, the Venoms doubled their lead, with Watambala capitalising on another mistake by Mbarara City when they chose to play from the back and lost possession at the edge of the box.
The win takes Vipers to the top of the table on 27 points, with a game to spare, one ahead of KCCA FC, who lost 2-0 to Police. On the other hand, Mbarara City dropped to the relegation zone in 14th place on ten points.
