Team Uganda continued to impress on Day Two of the 17th Africa Aquatics Swimming Championships in Oran, Algeria, building on the momentum from the opening day, where Gloria Anna Muzito won the country’s first medal of the competition.

Muzito once again led the charge for Uganda with another outstanding performance in the women’s events. In the morning heats of the Women’s 200m Freestyle, she qualified comfortably for the final after finishing fourth overall in 2:13.65. She returned in the evening session and produced a brilliant swim to claim bronze in the final with a time of 2:03.70, narrowly behind Egypt’s Lojine Abdallah and Zimbabwe’s Anje Van As.

The performance also saw Muzito set a new Ugandan national record in the Women’s 200m Freestyle, lowering her previous national mark of 2:04.99, which she had set on 11 November 2025 at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Dolphins Swim Club star was not done yet. She also qualified for the Women’s 50m Butterfly final after placing second in the heats in 27.93. In the evening final, she delivered another podium finish, winning silver in 27.61 behind Senegal’s Oumy Diop.

That time of 27.61 also established a new Ugandan National Record in the Women’s 50m Butterfly, further cementing Muzito’s place among Uganda’s top swimmers and one of the standout athletes at this year’s championships.

Uganda also had strong representation in the junior boys’ breaststroke events. Jordan Jolly Ssamula advanced to the Boys’ 100m Breaststroke final after qualifying seventh overall in the morning heats with a time of 1:08.40. He improved in the evening final, clocking 1:07.63 to finish sixth overall in a highly competitive race.

Fellow Ugandan swimmer Kyle Christian Kaweesa Kimuli narrowly missed the final after finishing ninth in the heats with a time of 1:09.26, just outside qualification.

In the butterfly races, Calvin Pendo Moses Kaumi competed in the Men’s 50m Butterfly, posting 27.45 in the preliminaries. Meanwhile, Tendo Mukalazi finished 13th overall in the senior men’s category with a time of 26.09.

Uganda’s junior swimmers also continued gaining valuable continental experience. Matayo Ethani Ssengooba finished 14th in the Boys’ 50m Butterfly heats with a time of 27.14, while Tara Ann Mary Kisawuzi Naluwoza placed 13th in the Girls’ 50m Butterfly after clocking 30.09.

In the Boys’ 200m Freestyle, Matayo Ssengooba also represented Uganda and finished 16th overall in 2:12.78.

With multiple finals appearances and more medals added to Uganda’s tally, Team Uganda’s campaign in Algeria continues to gather momentum. Attention now turns to the next round of races, where swimmers including Calvin Pendo Moses Kaumi, and Peyton Mary Suubi are expected to be back in action as Uganda looks to continue making waves at the continental championships.
