Mt St Henry’s High School has surprised everyone in the Super 8 by clinching a place in the semifinals of the ongoing Girls Cricket Week.

The Mukono-based school has ridden its luck since it got a wild card into the tournament, and after two big wins against record winners Jinja SSS and Mukono rivals St John’s SSS Mukono they booked a place in the semifinals.

Jinja SSS will not be adding to their eight titles this year after losing to defending champion Olila High School in the morning. Olila High batted first and Joan Ilora (65) anchored the innings for her side against one of the best bowling attacks of the tournament.

In reply, Jinja SSS was slow out of the blocks, and that ultimately cost them the game because the required rate got so big in the end. That loss meant that Jinja SSS needed to win against Mt St Henry’s High School for them to progress, unfortunately, the wild card team gave no respect to the record winners, nicking them by 14 runs.

The loss marked an end of the journey for Jinja SS, and even if they win against St John’s SS Mukono, they will not be able to catch Mt St Henry’s High School Mukono.

Meanwhile, Light SS, the only other unbeaten team, fought hard to get past Masaka SSS to book their semifinal place.

The 2024 winners suffered a bit, but eventually their experience helped them get past Masaka SSS, who needed a win to remain alive in the tournament, but their morning loss to Sacred Heart SS had already compounded their misery.

The 2025 semifinalists will not be at the business end of the tournament, which leaves Sacred Heart and Light SSS the teams to progress from Group B of the Super 8.

The semifinals will be played tomorrow afternoon, with the final of the tournament slated for Saturday afternoon.
