Stepping onto the floor for your senior national team debut is daunting enough. Doing it against some of the most physical, athletic players on the continent is a whole different baptism of fire.
For rising guard Edrine Ekau, his first taste of action with the Silverbacks was a stark reminder of the massive leap to international basketball.
Yet, despite the extreme toughness of the game, the youngster is embracing the challenge with open arms and a fierce determination to grow.
“It’s super exciting, because I mean, it’s my first time to play such games and also be on the senior national team,” Ekau said, reflecting on his milestone debut.
“The level of toughness and scale is really extreme, so I’m trying to really adjust and adapt.”
That adjustment period started immediately on the court, where Ekau found himself matched up against elite opposition.
“I played my first game against Rounder and I think for me, it’s super tough because this guy’s physical, tough, aggressive, and athletic,” Ekau admitted candidly.
“But I think for me, it’s really a learning ground to get better and improve as a player.”
Navigating the high-pressure environment of international basketball can easily overwhelm a newcomer, but Ekau hasn’t had to walk the path alone.
The guard credited the team’s leadership, specifically veteran presence Titus Lual and the team captain, Robinson Opong for keeping his confidence intact when the pressure mounted.
“Commun is a really encouraging guy,” Ekau shared. “Then the captain, he’s really encouraging. If I’ve made a bad decision, he’s really there to lift me up and get onto the next play—like, not to think too much when I’m playing and just be me and do what I’m supposed to do as a player on the team.”
That mentorship is proving crucial for the rookie as he learns to shake off mistakes and adapt to the bruising pace of the international game.
While the learning curve is steep, Ekau isn’t letting the scale of the moment diminish his ambitions for the team.
When asked if he had a message for the passionate Ugandan basketball fans watching his journey unfold, the young guard kept it short, sweet, and confident.
“Finally, my message to the fans is: we are going to produce great results. That’s all.”
With that blend of humility, a willingness to learn, and unwavering backing from his veteran teammates, Ekau’s journey with the Silverbacks is just getting started—and the future looks incredibly bright.
