After a gruelling 120 minutes of scintillating football, Switzerland eliminated Colombia 4-3 in post-match penalties at the BC Place stadium in Vancouver.
The normal time of this Round of 16 FIFA World Cup 2026 contest had ended goalless before the extra 30 minutes also failed to produce a winner.
Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was the hero with a save in the shoot-out.
The Swiss will now face the reigning world champions, Argentina, in the quarterfinals.
Argentina survived a scare, recovering from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2 at the Atlanta Stadium.
Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko scored for the African representatives, who led 2-0 until the 78th minute.
Cristian Romero, skipper Lionel Andres Messi and Enzo Fernandez replied for Argentina.
All the quarterfinalists are now all known.
Quarter final line-up:
France will tussle with the only remaining African representative, Morocco, at the Boston Stadium in Foxborough on Thursday, 8th July 2026.
The next day, it will be Spain against Belgium at the Los Angeles Stadium, Inglewood.
Norway will then take on England at the Miami Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Argentina plays Switzerland at the Kansas City Stadium, Kansas City.
