The Uganda football fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the passing of SC Villa captain David Owori on Wednesday.
The right back, one of the longest serving players at SC Villa currently passed on at Case Clinic in Kampala following attacks by suspected thugs as he returned home from training on Tuesday.
Owori who featured for among other clubs Proline and Vipers in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League was part of the SC Villa squad that won a record extending 17th league title in 2023/24.
He captained SC Villa to the Fufa Super 8 trophy last season and even featured in the first game of the current series in the 1-1 draw with Maroons on Saturday.
His death has prompted an immediate outpouring of grief from teammates, ex-teammates, rival clubs, football governing bodies and the Parliament of Uganda where a moment of silence was observed with Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa calling for security to investigate the manner of the attack.
A brief profile
David Owori aka Colgate was born on September 28, 1998 in Tororo but grew up in Makindye Kampala.
He started his career at Nsambya Young academy and later Lukuli United before he moved to eight-time league champions Vipers SC in 2016.
Primary a central midfielder, Owori also had a stint with Proline FC before he joined SC Villa for the first spell that lasted from 2018 to 2021.
He moved to Spain and Sweden where he featured for Velez CF and Utiskitens BK respectively but rejoined SC Villa in 2023.
He was instrumental in Villa’s 2023/24 league triumph and captained the Jogoos to their most recent trophy, the Fufa Super 8 last year in August as they overcame NEC 2-0 in the final at Kadiba.
