Cameroon and Malawi booked the last two spots in the semifinals of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after winning their respective quarterfinal matches on Sunday.
Debutants Malawi extended their Cinderella story by eliminating Ghana 2-1 to progress to the semifinals.
On the other hand, Cameroon dumped out holders Nigeria, winning the tightly contested game 1-0 courtesy of Myriam Maéva Nyadjou’s solitary strike.
Malawi won remarkably, coming from a goal down to eliminate Ghana. Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah had fired the Black Queens into an early lead, just seven minutes after kickoff.
However, skipper Temwa Chawinga levelled matters five minutes later to draw the Scorchers level before Rose Kadzere found the winner in the second half.
Beyond just the semifinal spots, both Malawi and Cameroon got direct tickets to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The duo is joined by Morocco and Algeria as the other two African Nations that have directly qualified to the World Cup.
Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast and South Africa, who lost at the quarterfinals in WAFCON, will face off for the extra slot to the World Cup.
In the semifinals, Malawi will face Algeria while Cameroon will take on hosts Morocco, with both games slated for Wednesday.
