Uganda’s Baby Cricket Cranes achieved the primary objective of their trip to Rwanda by returning to the top flight of African cricket after winning their fourth game at the Division 2 qualifiers.
The youngsters achieved the feat after a 98-run win over a bogey side, Sierra Leone.
Uganda won the toss and elected to bat first. They had been piling on the runs, but against Sierra Leone, things were tricky and only a resilient half century from Robert Owili, his third at the tournament, rescued the innings for Uganda; with the only other notable contribution coming from Richard Sohera (31) in the team total.
Uganda managed to find at least 152 runs with their resource envelope of 10 wickets.
In reply, Sierra Leone was resilient, and at 40/3 the game was balanced until the slow bowling options of Hamidu Munigwa (3/6) and Jackson Asiku (3/13) ripped through the middle order and set up a defining win for Uganda in a game that could have gone either way.
The win means Uganda gain promotion to the first division, where Kenya, Namibia and Tanzania are waiting. They are now joined by Uganda, Rwanda and Nigeria with the remaining fixtures a formality for who will be the overall winner of the tournament.
Uganda will take on second place Rwanda in their final game of the tournament.
