Guinea Bissau produced a stunning performance to overcome Tanzania as the two teams faced off at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Friday.
Taifa Stars, who already sealed their spot at next year’s edition as co-hosts alongside Uganda and Kenya, suffered a 2-0 loss at home.
Franculino Djú fired the visitors ahead in the 33rd minute before Mama Baldé got the second in the 58th minute to secure victory.
The result means Guinea Bissau take early charge of Group L ahead of Tanzania, Nigeria and Madagascar.
Tanzania will return to action on Tuesday next week away to Madagascar while Guinea Bissau will face Nigeria.
Elsewhere, in Group J, Senegal under the stewardship of Patrick Vieira were held to a one-all away to Mozambique.
Nicolas Jackson gave Senegal the lead in the 32nd minute, but Mozambique were able to level matters through Geny Catamo shortly before halftime.
Sudan, who are also in Group J, earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Ethiopia thanks to Mohamed Eisa’s late goal that came in the 86th minute.
