Uganda Cranes skipper Denis Onyango has lauded the players displayed in the game against Tunisia played on Thursday at Hammadi Agrebi Stadium in Radès.
Despite going down early in the game when Alaa Arous scored in the 12th minute, Uganda fought back to salvage a draw thanks to Rogers Mato’s 68th minute equalizer.
Onyago believes, the players showed a great fighting spirit to be able to earn a point on the road.
“The message was clear that the boys have to fight. The coach spoke and we spoke to each other and we had to fight because we knew that we were in a very difficult territory to come and get results but credit to goes to the entire team for the spirit,” he started.
“ We could have done better on the goal we conceded but it was a wake up to us and we responded quite well especially in the second half where we managed to get an equalizer and then held on up to the end and that is the fighting spirit we needed.”
Onyango believes the current team is work in progress and thus it is important for the players to work together.
“I believe that I have seen different generation of players coming to the national team but its all about belief, hardwork and the fighting spirit. Of course it is work in progress, some of the boys, its their first time on the national team but they showed that they are willing to fight for the flag and those of us who have been around are trying to encourage and push them.”
Ahead of the game against Libya slated for Tuesday, 29th at Hoima City Stadium, Onyango has called upon fans to turn up in large numbers.
“Our focus now shifts to the game against Libya. It is a new stadium for us as well because the national team has not played their before. We therefore call upon, the fans to turn up in big numbers and support us.”
Uganda is in Group H alongside Tunisia, Libya and Botswana.
