Kutchi Tigers roared back to the top of Group A on Sunday, September 27, 2026, after a commanding 147-run victory over Kifaru Cricket Club in the afternoon UG20 encounter at the Lugogo Cricket Oval.

The victory came after rain washed out the Tigers’ morning fixture, which was recorded as a draw, leaving them with a win and a draw from the day’s programme. This result caps a strong recovery for the Tigers after a difficult opening against defending champions Ismaili Community, where they suffered a double loss.
They have since responded with a double victory over Soroti City Cricket Club, followed by Sunday’s draw and win against Kifaru, taking them to six points at the top of Group A, two points clear of Ismaili Community.
Boosted by the return of Cricket Cranes players Robinson Obuya and wicketkeeper Cyrus Kakuru, the Tigers posted a formidable 249 for six in 18 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat, before dismissing Kifaru for just 102 in 15 overs. Nitin Jeshani provided the foundation for Kutchi’s imposing total, smashing 90 off 41 balls, including nine fours and six sixes, at a strike rate of 219.51.
He was well supported by Kakuru, who marked his return with an explosive 44 off 22 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes, while Obuya contributed 23 off nine balls, including a four and three sixes. Steven Wabwose remained unbeaten on 31 off 17 balls, with two fours and two sixes, while Ghanshyam Ashani produced a stunning late cameo of 24 off just six balls, striking one four and three sixes at a remarkable strike rate of 400.
Avnish Vekariya added 14 off nine balls, Mitul Pindoriya made six off five, while Mayur Hirani was unbeaten without facing a ball. Kutchi Tigers also collected 17 extras, including 16 wides and one no-ball. Kifaru’s bowling attack struggled to contain the Tigers, with Hardik Donga taking two wickets for 64 runs in four overs, Devansh Patel claiming two for 34 in four overs, and Thummaluru Veera Sagar Reddy taking one for 27 in two overs.
Kifaru’s chase got off to the worst possible start when Devansh Patel was dismissed by Ashani for a first-ball duck. Harsh Panchal briefly threatened to revive the chase with a blistering 47 off 18 balls, smashing five fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 261.11.
But once Panchal departed at 57, Kifaru’s innings quickly unravelled. Utkarsh Kothari made 19 off 19 balls, Hardik Donga scored 17 off 13, Darshan Patel added eight, while Hiral Patel made two, Yug Haria three, and Farid Dinani one. Ritesh Patel and Thummaluru Veera Sagar Reddy both fell for ducks, with Sai Krishna unbeaten without facing a delivery as Kifaru were bowled out for 102 in 15 overs.
The Kutchi bowling attack was led by Vekariya Kush Mahesh, who claimed three wickets for 18 runs in three overs. Dhansuk Jesani was equally impressive, returning two wickets for just eight runs in three overs, while Wabwose took two for 21 in four overs. Ashani, Smith Vekariya, and the rest of the attack completed the demolition.
Obuya believes the Tigers have regained their confidence at the right time. “We had two double blows against Ismaili Community, but today we came back stronger. Going ahead in the coming fixtures, we are going to keep our heads and shoulders up and look forward to getting out of the group stages,” Obuya said.
The Cricket Cranes star also has a personal target of helping the side go beyond the group stage, adding, “My goal personally is to help the team get out of the group and make it to the semi-finals, hopefully win the trophy, because this is one of the reasons I’m in this team.”
Kakuru, meanwhile, was pleased with his contribution with the bat but admitted that the Tigers still have work to do in the field, noting, “In today’s game I felt the team could do better in fielding because we dropped some catches which enabled Kifaru to cross 100 but would have defended and stopped them on 80.”
The wicketkeeper-batter was particularly encouraged by the freedom with which he played his innings, sharing, “Personally, I came in pressure-free, which enabled me to play my shots and score 44 runs off 22 balls. Hopefully, I have to keep on building on that, playing my shots without any pressure and score more runs for the team.”
Kutchi Tigers’ next assignment will be against Tornado Cricket Club on Sunday, October 4, 2026, who earlier faced Soroti City Cricket Club in a series they split at the Florida Oval.
Elsewhere in UG20 action, Group C saw Chennai Cricket Club and Kutchi Tigers B share their doubleheader at the Florida Oval, where Kutchi Tigers B won the morning encounter by eight wickets before Chennai Cricket Club responded with a seven-wicket victory in the afternoon.
In Group D, JACC swept Africa Cricket Club, winning the morning encounter by 81 runs and completing a nine-wicket victory in the afternoon at the GM Sugar Oval, while GM Sugar also completed a double over Jinja SS Cricket Club, winning the morning game by 123 runs and the afternoon encounter by eight wickets at the Jinja Oval.
In Group B, Ceylon Lions and SKLPS Cricket Club also shared the spoils, with Ceylon Lions winning the morning game by 21 runs while SKLPS CC took the afternoon fixture by 37 runs at the Lakeside Oval in Entebbe.
