FT: Zambia 1-0 Uganda

It was nerve-wrecking and epic as the clock went down to 90 minutes in the first leg of the AFCON qualifier between the Uganda Cranes and reigning champions Zambia down in Ndola. Uganda worked hard to keep a narrow margin and lost 1-0 to the Chipolopolo at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium.
Zambia skipper Christopher Katongo was the star as he put the ball past Dennis Onyango in less than half an hour. The visitors, who precisely gave no show in the first 45 minutes tried to push Zambia to the edge but there was no fruit infront of goal. But they would have scored if Emmanuel Okwi had met Moses Oloya’s cross from the right wing on 59 minutes. Substitute Dan Wagaluka was denied celebration after his shot from 17 yards was put out by goal keeper Kennedy Mweene with seven minutes to play.
The display in Ndola left Herve Renard with lots to ponder ahead of their return in Kampala. Whereas the Cranes fancy their chances to turn the tables in Namboole on October 13, the Chipolopolo were in need of an extra goal but on two occasions James Chamanga and Katongo were kept out. The Cranes can be sure of a place in SouthAfrica next January ahead of the titleholders if win by two goals in Kampala. You can catch all the match action by clicking here
