As the 2025 AFCON championship came to a grand climax in Morocco, Senegal won the tournament for the second time.
This followed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco (after extra time) during an ill-tempered match played before over 65,000 spectators at the gigantic Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Villarreal midfielder Pape Alassane Gueye was the scorer of the lone strike in extra time after normal time had ended goalless to call for the extra-30 minutes.
Brahim Diaz missed a late-late penalty when his weak shot was easily saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Osoque Mendy.

The individual awards:
Sadio Mane (Senegal) was named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP). Mane was instrumental in Senegal’s triumph from the group stages up to the final duel.
During the final, Mane convinced many of the Senegal players who had walked off the field of play protesting a penalty from Morocco that was later saved.
Diaz (Morocco) finished as top scorer with five goals. Yassine Bounou (Morocco) was best goalkeeper.
Morocco won the fair-play award.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino accompanied by the CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe officiated the medal trophy ceremony.
Meanwhile, Dr Motsepe officially handed over the CAF flag to the three East African Countries (Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania), the next hosts for AFCON in 2027.
