Sometimes numbers can lie. At the start of the 50 over league you wouldn’t bet your money on KICC being anywhere near the league title.
However, the veterans in KICC have shown that there is time for experience with KICC involved in a 4 way tie for the title.
KICC has won both its games and if they win in Jinja, they will be sure of not just staying in the league but also have shot at winning the title.
Led by African Champion Franklin Najjumba from the front with both the ball and bat, KICC managed to beat former winners Wanderers and Tornado B in their first two games and will now face a Jinja SS side that recently lost to Wanderers.
Najjumba has had good support from the returning Mary Nanderenga and Maureen Thawithemwira who have both made notable contributions especially the former.
Team Manager Hanumant Kathkar is proud of the efforts of the ladies and remains open minded on where they can finish
“I think KICC ladies team is doing good this season. When we started this season, we were in a relegation battle but now after 2 games we are in position of title contender so that shows how much we have improved. We shall continue to do successful work as a team and as a club.”
KICC had been criticized for using its deep pockets to bring over 8 Kenyan players but for the win over Tornado Bee they had only local players which Hanumant feels is good for the development of the ladies.
“We have given chance to three school kids from Soroti and those young school girls played very well to beat Tornado Bee. We are trying to promote local talents.”
Though they lie 3rd on the table, KICC has played a game less compared to Jinja SS and Olila High and a win on Saturday should take them back to the top.
Jinja SS on the other hand lost to Wanderers last weekend in a marginal loss and they will be very dangerous on home turf. National team all rounder Rita Musamali felt they let themselves down in the chase as they were clear favorites to win the game.
If Jinja SS are to win, they will need Stephanie Nampiina and national ladies captain Kevin Awino to be at their best.
They have dominated the short version of the game winning the T20 league a couple of times and they are the Schools Cricket champions but the national league which is played in the longer version still eludes them.
