FMU eye fans’ safety at Lubiri sprint

Federation of Motor Sport Uganda (FMU) unveiled this year’s CBS Premier Sprint at Lubiri on Thursday. Following recent unexpected accidents, bloody scenes and fracas in Motorsport and in other disciplines world over, event manager, Mukiibi Katende said the sprint that is set to flag off this Sunday will cost nearly shs 40million.

“The biggest lot of this money will be spent on safety costs for police, ambulances and the safety officials” Two tracks with a run each will be used by the

contenders. Both runs have two lanes of 2.2km apiece. Drivers will compete in an 8.8km distance in total.

Meanwhile, FMU president, George Kagimu was enthralled about this year’s sprint edition.  “I thank the Buganda government and CBS for their enduring support. I believe this event will be extremely competitive compared to the past years” Kagimu said.

Close to 40 entries are expected for this event and impressively, half the number has already confirmed to take part. Unlike in the past, the launched event will score points for drivers and bikers for the National Rally Championship (NRC).

Stiff competition from Masaka Pine Rigde rally winner, Nasser Mutebi, Suzan Muwonge, Black Widow is what two time NRC champion, Ponsiano Lwakataka is the sprint’s titleholder will face. The Lubiri event will be this year’s first motor sport activity to be held in Kampala.
