
Flamboyant national golf player Willy Kitata, kept his early season momentum, by claiming the prestigious Mehta Open Golf Championship yesterday at Lugazi golf club outside Kampala city.
Kitata had a perfect score of 134 gross to stave off 80 golfers on a day that the amateur players returned with brilliant scores on a very challenging 14 hole course that had a new look. “It’s always great to come to this course and win something,” the Entebbe based golfer said. “I just want to maintain this form as I seek better ground to turn professional.”
The day’s action was predominately stolen by up-country golfers who had a nice round on the challenging golf course at Lugazi in the first major event on the Uganda Golf Union calendar. Jinja’s Ronnie King, was runner-up with 136 gross. Jaffa Tebba claimed the men’s group A accolade with a score of 134 nett while Jinja’s Willie Kasaijja, who has developed and helped Jinja youth golfers claimed group B with a score of 130 nett.
City Tyres, one of the leading tyre distribution company’s who are sponsoring the annual Uganda Golf Union event for a second year running sponsored the trophies, the kits and coupons for the various winners. They promised a long time relationship with the prestigious tournament that had golfers from Kampala, Fort Portal,Entebbe, Jinja and Kigali participating.
The Mehta Golf Club has upgraded to a 14 hole course and will be putting up four more holes to get into the international standards. Said Mawa equaled the course with a blistering score nine under par 61 gross to beat 17 professionals. On his run to this feat he had had 10 birdies, 1 bogey and seven pars. It was the fifth time that the towering golfer was winning on this course having won fourth times as an amateur and now us a professional.
