Defending champion Duncan Mugabe, will not take part in this year’s Castle Lite Uganda Tennis Open that is slated to swing into action from June 2-9 at Lugogo tennis center.
“Duncan will not be taking part in this year’s event as he is under-going a training programme in San Francisco,California ahead of the summer Olympics,” Cedric Babu, the chairman of Uganda Lawn Tennis Association said. “It’s an own intiative and we hope that he can get a wild card for him to participate at the games.”
Castle Lite together with Rwenzori Beverages have sunk 35 million shillings in prize money that is up for grabs in various stages of the tournament starting from the quarter-finals.
The men’s winner will walk away with a trophy and 2.5 million shillings while the ladies winner will win a trophy and 2 million shillings.
The local organisers Uganda Lawn Tennis Association expect participants from Rwanda,Burundi,Kenya, Tanzania,Zimbabwe. Players expected to take part include Kenya’s veteran player Alan Cooper,Francis Thuku Rogoi,Gilbert Kibet, Rwanda’s Jean Claude Gasigwa, Ugandan players vying for major honours include David Oringa,Henry Muyanja,Robert Buyinza and several other players. The tournament will start with qualifiers from June 2-3.
