Eight days ago, Ugandan top female marathoner, Jane Suuto finished third in the Latvia marathon and secured a slot at the summer games. Just a week later, middle distance athlete Annet Negesa finished third too in the women’s 800m at the World Athletics Challenge Meet in Hengelo, Holland yesterday. Negesa finished behind former world champion and race winner, Kenyan star Janeth Jepkosgei after clocking 1:59.08.
Rising Cuban athlete Yuneysi Santiusti took second slot in the event. Negesa is the Maputo All Africa gold medalist. Another Ugandan, Janet Achola posted 4:05.52 in 1500m to not only rewrite the national record but also secure a London ticket. The athletes’ heroic performances have many hopes for an Olympic medal since 1996 in Atlanta.
