Youngster Daniel Mihigo was never a top contender but he finally pulled it off in fashion to win the fourth edition of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) badminton championship at Lugogo Indoor Stadium on Sunday.
Amidst a cheerful crowd, he caused the biggest shock of the tourney as he powered to a 2-1 win (21-19 22-24 21-8), upsetting favourite Wilson Tukire in the men’s singles final.
“Last time, he (Tukire) beat me in semi-final and so I worked hard. I am happy to win this,”Mihigo, a 17-year-old student from Kakungulu Memorial School remarked.
Along with Rogers Bakaku, Tukire suffered another loss in the doubles final to Fred Kirabo and Brian Ssuna.
In the women’s category, top seed Shamim Bangi retained her title with a walk over Margaret Nankabirwa. The two had earlier teamed up to beat Rose Nakalya and Daisy Nakalyango in the doubles.
