KCCA Leopards Vs UCU Lady Canons 6:30pm
Falcons Vs Warriors 8:30pm
After waltzing to victory in game 1 of the ANBL playoff finals three days ago, Falcons take the floor of Lugogo Indoor Stadium this evening with reams of confidence hoping to double their advantage. Their opponents, Warriors will be seeking to overturn the opening game debacle.
Both teams started slow in game 1 scoring an equal share of a combined 16 points in the first quarter and nearly matched shot-for-shot in the next two periods but thereafter, Warriors offense dipped. Falcons’ defense had a lot to do with it, taking away easy and close-range looks for Warriors. Falcons defended the key absolutely well anchored by Philip Ameny forcing Warriors into Death Valley shots that were inexorable.
Warriors played awful defense in the fourth quarter, sending Geoffrey Omondi to the line on four separate trips and the point guard hit nailed 7 throws that made the difference. The 2009 champions played with levity in the twilight of the game, accepting defeat with over two minutes to play when the Falcons went into double digit lead, an attitude that should change. “We made a lot of mistakes in the game and we will work on those” Warriors’ coach, Mandy Juruni said after the game 1 loss.
The Warriors’ bench has to be more productive in game 2 than they were in the opening game . Their bench was bettered, contributing 22 points compared to Falcons 27 points. Not even Warriors’ starters were up to it, as only Norman Blick and Ivan Enabu netted in double figures while Ameny , Omondi and Peter Elungant logged on double figures for Falcons. Warriors have to respond and Falcons’ coach, Gad Eteu is well aware. “The work goes on and we know they (Warriors) will come back hungry” he said
Meanwhile UCU Lady Canons will be up to build on the low scoring, 48-41 win in game 1 when they face KCCA Leopards in the second game. Only Purity Adhiambo logged a double-double for UCU, unusual of the university side. Lorraine Akiny and Peace Proscovia had a quiet offensive game 1 combining for just 9 points but if the duo get out of their scoring shell, it won’t bode any good for Leopards who need to reduce the scoring burden on Martha Soigi. At least three leopards have to put up figures to overcome lady canons at least once in these series. They should get their best shooter, Flavia Oketcho a lot of open shots and her choice of shots to take has to be better than she did in game one when she was 0-of-10 from long range.
