Burkina Faso 1-0 Togo
For the second time in history, Burkina Faso have qualified for the semi-finals of the Africa Nations Cup after beating Togo 1-0 in the last of the four quarter finals of the 2013 edition at Nelspruit.
The Stallions will have danger man Jonathan Pitroipa to thank after his extra time header inside the last minute of the first half of extra time beat Togo keeper to find the back of the net.
The number 11 rose highest to head home from a corner kick down the left.
Despite dominating play throughout the game, Burkina Faso failed to break a resilient Togo side that deserve credit for well organised defending.
It was an entertaining barren draw in the 90 minutes that promised a goal due to endless attacks especially from Paul Put’s charges but the full time whistle from referee Badarra Diatta meant the teams had to seperated in extra time.
As everyone looked forward to penalties, Pitroipa had other ideas. Despite a late charge from Togo led by skipper Emmanuel Adebayor, Burkina Faso held on to reach the semis of the competition for the first time since 1998 when they hosted.
They will now meet Ghana’s Black Stars in the battle for a final berth on Wednesday.
