Uganda’s top two tennis players David Oringa and Duncan Mugabe are expected to clash off when the Best of the Best tennis tournament swings into action this Sunday at the Center Court Sports Club, Lugogo.
Arthur Segawa, the manager of the Center Court Sports Club has offered 10 million shillings to this tournament that has been revived by various tennis well wishers and players ahead of a what is expected to be a busy tennis season this year.
According to the organisers of the event Duncan Mugabe, winner of the 2011 Uganda and Kenya Open is the seed two while last year’s Uganda Open winner David Oringa, is the event’s seed one. “It is going to be a tough,but interesting tournament and with money incentives involved their is going to be alot of shocks and surprises,” Dean Kibirige,the Uganda Lawn Tennis Association assistant treasurer said. “It’s great that we are reviving this tournament and hope that it will get stronger and stronger with time.”
The tournament is a round of 16 knockout tournament that will conclude on March 2 however players will be playing the best of five tie-break sets. Robert Buyinza,Moses Otiti and Carey Kalungi, complete the top five in this tournament the first of its kind on the local tennis calendar.
The winner of the tournament will walk away with 500,000,but at the same time have 3.6 million which he can use to either continue playing at the Center Court or any other business. The finalist will get 300,000 while a semi-finalist and quater-finalist will walk away with 200,000 and 100,000 respectively.
