Uganda Cranes’ skipper Andy Mwesigwa honored Stephen Kiprotich who came sixth in the 33rd edition of the Virgin London Marathon held in London on April 21. Ethiopian Tsegaye Kebede unleashed a late surge to take it all.
Mwesigwa thanked Stephen Kiprotich’s enduring efforts but blamed him for not having beaten the race’s top five in time. “Well done our boy. “That is not bad”. Andy Mwesigwa said in an interview with Kawowo. “Anyway he finished strong but he would have been close to the first three guys, am sure he would have beaten them on finishing because he had power”.
Kiprotich, is the 2012 Olympic champion in the marathon, with a winning time of 2:08:01. This was the first Olympic medal for Uganda since 1972, and the first ever in the marathon.
Mwesigwa is a Ugandan international footballer who plays professionally for Kazakh side FC Ordabasy, as a defender.
He began his career in 2002 with Ugandan side SC Villa, before moving to Icelandic club ÍBV in 2006. Mwesigwa made his international debut for Uganda in 2003 and replaced Ibrahim Ssekagya as the national team captain.
After spending the 2010 season with Chinese side Chongqing Lifan, in February 2011 he signed a two-year contract with Kazakhstan Premier League side FC Ordabasy.
