Ugandan weight lifters will take to the MTN Lugogo Arena this weekend for the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation Weightlifting Championships, scheduled to commence this Thursday, 27th March.
Despite fielding only four lifters; Ismail Katamba (62kg), Khalid Batuusa (77kg), Godfrey Baligeya and Rashid Lubega in Saudi Arabia two years ago, team Uganda will now comprise of more, a chance to win more medals as the secretary of Uganda Weightlifting Federation Nasif Kalungi stated.
“In the first edition we did not perform well, but we are hosting, we have all the chances to win all the medals.”
Part of the team will be, Silvester Luyombya, Mike Sebbale, Jamil Lubega, Charles Sekyaya, Semei Kasumba and Becky Namusoke among others.
Over 70 lifters from Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Qatar, Libya,Turkey, Somalia, Bangladesh, Kenya,Syria, Sierra Leone and Cameroon are expected to arrive in Uganda from 27th to 28th March, for the championships that will climax on 4th April.
The last edition was held in Saudi Arabia in 2012, 2007 Africa Junior champion Ismail Katamba garnering the only medal for Uganda. Iran is the defending Champion.
