The Kampala International University Volleyball Open Championship is the only title a star studded Sky had in their trophy cabin in as many finals since last year. Last Saturday on form Sport-S defeated Sky 3-2 to add the KIU title to the Makerere and Ndejje Open titles they have won this year.
Sky created a ten point difference in the first set (12-2) but a determined Sport-S did the chasing until they closed the gap to two (18-20), they made it 23 all. But wise decisions on the by Sky’s Isaac Omedo saw him block Dickens Otim twice to take the lead 25-23.
Sky’s owner Charles Kamuvi stood in for absent coach Daniel Kazibwe and proved that his coaching abilities are farfetched as he rested receiver attacker Emma Kato and setter John Bosco at 20 all. Kamuvi replaced the duo with tired Douglas Kigundu and Joseph Apuuli, Sport-S won the set 25-21.
Moments later Sky led again as they took the third 25-23 before Sport-S leveled matters again with the same score to force a tie breaker. Sport-S’ Ivan Ongom who had flashes of brilliance in the earlier sets came to the fore as he didn’t only torment Sky with his diagonal attackers in Position two and four.
The left handed attacker was crucial on cover, and his back court attacks always touched the ground unbothered. Though he almost gave the away with Sport-S leading 10-8, Ongom spiked out twice to make it 11 all, again Kamuvi replace Opendi and kato for Kigundu and inexperienced Samuel Nkata.
Ongom didn’t waste time as his service teased Sky as they played four touches. He served again for Kigundu to set up Jonathan Akuguzibwe who was blocked by Otim for Sport-S to set 15-13.
