It was the third straight final that Nemostars was playing at the 22nd edition of the Dr. Aporu-Okol Memorial International Volleyball Tournament, and their second victory.

Under the stewardship of skipper George Aporu, Nemostars defeated last year’s winners Sport-S 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-15) on Sunday.

Aporu stood out on attack and the block but he wouldn’t have had the last laugh if receiver attacker Tom Paul Amou, centre blockers Fahad Zungu and Eric Ojamuge, setter Smith Okumu and Diagonal player Anthony Oleuko had not come to the party. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it alone,” Aporu said after the final. “I am surrounded by the best players in the country currently and we complement each other every well,” he added.

On the other hand Sport-S struggled on the block, failed to receive and their cover was wanting throughout the three sets. Dickens Otim failed to replicate his attacking prowess that earned him the best attacker seven days ago at the Rwanda Genocide Memorial Tournament. “You can’t win matches if you can’t defend, and when the other teams defends and attacks, that is what happened to us today” Otim said.

As always left handed power attacker Ivan Ongom choked. Vision Volleyball Camp (VVC) defeated Nkumba 3-1, to win the women’s title on their first time of asking.

A total of 22 men’s and 12 women’s clubs, nine secondary and primary schools’ teams for boys and six for girls in the secondary and primary category took part in the three day tournament.

Winners Clubs Men: Nemostars, Women: VVC

Secondary Schools Boys: St Mary’s Kitende Girls: Malava Girls

Primary School Boys: Nyero Primary School, Girls: Sunrise Primary School
