Like the target has been for the past two years, Edwin Ekiring and Shamim Bangi will once again aim to accumulate points at the Ethiopian Badminton International that starts on Friday and then at the Nigerian showpiece in the first weekend of October.
The duo is trying to brighten their chances of appearing at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Ekiring was at 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 edition in London and a third straight appearance at the games will be a landmark. Bangi is trying to make her maiden appearance.
The only way she can achieve that is by collecting points at international tournaments between now and May 1, 2016 and also improving her world ranking from 139th to at least the top 100.
Playing at tournaments alone won’t help; I need to score points to improve my ranking
Bangi who is ranked fourth on the continent said while appearing on a Game On Extra, a daily sports show on Urban TV.
I can only score points if I beat those players ranked better than me and I have the confidence that I am in better position to do so after winning the Kampala International last week
Bangi has a tough draw in Ethiopia, if she goes past local Getachew Firehiwot, she will play Kate Fune from Mauritius who is ranked second on the continent and 72nd in the world.
