Formerly a training facility for Vipers Sports ground, the St Mary’s stadium in Kitende village is in the last stages of completion.

Construction of the facility started mid 2016 with the erection of fans’ stands, stadium and administrative offices as well as re-greening the old playing turf.

After more than seven months of effortless work, the stadium will ready for use and officially be opened in February 2017.

This was confirmed by the Vipers Sports Club president, Lawrence Mulindwa, during a press conference held on Thursday at the facility.

We are now in the final stages of the stadium construction.

We are completing the roofing and plumbing activities meanwhile the playing turf is also been closely monitored.

Mulindwa, whose address also combined the end of year message, also revealed his commitment to sports development in the country before leading the guided tour around the vast amazing facility, the first of its kind to be owned by an individual in the country.

I am 100 % committed to football development in Uganda. At the moment, the St Mary’s Stadium development project is one of my priorities.

It is self sacrifice and love for sports development coming entirely out of personal savings.

I believe by late January 2017, we shall have completed every work on the stadium.

Vipers is expected to shift base from Nakivubo stadium to the 15,000 seater facility.

They have been training at  St Mary’s College, Kisubi.

According to the designs at the stadium, it is intended to rhyme with the demands and expectations of an FIFA and CAF approved facility with good security and safety escape routes, ample parking space, great playing turf, modern dressing rooms, press box, media press conference room, administrative office space and other facilities expected of a modern stadium.

According to one of the Stadium engineers, Rashid Kimage, construction works have progressed well over the previous months.

St Mary’s Stadium will join the list of football facilities in the country.

Already, there exists Nelson Mandela National Stadium, Nakivubo, Kavumba Recreational, Phillip Omondi – Lugogo (astro turf), Kakindu, Bugembe, Betway Stadium (Arua), Mbale Municipal Stadium, Kakyeeka Stadium (Mbarara), Pece Stadium (Gulu) and a number of sub standard facilities across the country.
