Geoffrey Sserunkuma’s header gave KCCA Football Club a slim 1-0 win over Angola’s CD Primiero De Agosto the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round match played at Philip Omondi Stadium.

The veteran center forward was well positioned to head home a curling corner by second half substitute Brian Majwega, four minutes into the second half.

In the opening 45 minutes, the game played on astro turf surface remained well balanced with both sides creating half chances.

The home side came closest in the 39th minute when Ochaya’s diagonal ball was handled at the edge of 18 yard area by Paulo Natael Masukama.

The center referee first signaled for a penalty until the second assistant referee, Peter Sabatia Ovuamu called for a direct free-kick.

Ochaya blasted over the goal bar the resultant free-kick from about 20 yards.

The visitors had a first change of the game in the 67th minute when Joao Munha replaced Hermenegildo Bartolomeu.

It was a change intended to add urgency and pace for Dragan Jovic’s side but the home team remained dominant.

Sserunkuma headed out Majwega’s cross from the left and Paul Mucureezi’s shot from 30 yards missed target after an acrobatic save from goalie Adao Joadquin Cabaca.

As the second half started, KCCA brought on board winger Brian Majwega for striker Derrick Nsibambi who had been neutralized by the lanky pair of Beadrick Ungonda and skipper Afonso Massunguna.

Majwega’s introduction paid instant fruits as his curling corner was met by Sserunkuma past a diving goalie Cabaca in a crowded goal area.

The goal lit up the moods at a fully packed Lugogo arena, a stadium passed by CAF a few days ago to host a continental game of CAF Champions League stature.

Winger Vicent Kayizzii Walugembe became the second change for KCCA for midfielder Muzamiru Mutyaba three minutes to the hour mark before the final call when goal scorer Geoffrey Sserunkuma was rested for Robert Sentongo.

KCCA’s Joseph Ochaya and team captain Dennis Okot Oola were the two players booked in the entire duration of the match.

Ochaya became the first player to be booked by FIFA referee, Israel Mpaima Lemayian for blocking Ibukun Akinfewno in the 66th minute before Okot’s caution on the stroke of full-time.

The return leg will be played in the Angolan capital of Luanda in 8 days time.

During half time of the match, club legends Jolly Bananuka, John Mutenda, Moses Nsereko (R.I.P) and Fred Ogene were honoured by the Lugogo based outfit.
