Preparations for a successful Uganda International Badminton championship in Kampala have been completed.

According to the Uganda Badminton events coordinator Richard Ssali, every necessary ground work was executed earlier and only kick off awaits.

We expect a successful tournament at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala. This is after the necessary preparations were conducted with all the invitations done on time.

The four-day tournament officially starts on Thursday with the qualification matches at 1:30 p.m before the rest of the matches will resume on Friday through to Sunday.

A total of 115 players from 20 countries including France, Jordan, Italy, India, Mauritius, Egypt, DR Congo, Zambia and Kenya have been confirmed to take part.

Of the 115 players, 65 are local based and the rest foreign.

Ssali has assured the populous of sound preparations ahead of this international event which has been held since 2006.

There are 30 technical well trained officials; medical personnel, match controllers and a number of volunteers will be ready to serve at the event to make it eventful.

Prize Money:

A total of $8000 has been staked as prize money for the different winners in the five events – singles (men and women), doubles (men and women) and the mixed doubles.

The individual men and women winners will each pocket $1000 with the runners up taking home $500 apiece.

Doubles and mixed doubles winning teams will earn $300 for the hard earned sweat.

All the semi-finalists and quarter finalists will play for $200 and $90 apiece respectively.

Uganda’s only international referee Harriet Ssemugabi will preside over the entire tournament with assistance from the Badminton Confederation Africa operations manager, Sahir Edoo.

Selected Seeded Entries:

Some of the seeded entries for the men singles include Italian Rudolf Dellenbach, Mauritius’ duo of Aatish Lubah and Georges Julien Paul, Ahmed Salah (Egypt), Bahaedeen Ahamad Alshannik (Jordan) and Uganda’s Edwin Ekiring, Herbert Ebayo and Davies Senono.

A few of  the women are Bridget Shamim Bangi, Aisha Nakiyemba, Gladys Mbabazi, Hadia Hosny (Egypt), Ogar Siamupangila (Zambia) and Egyptian duo of Doha Hany and Menna Eltanany.

Africa’s finest players Kate Foo Kune (Mauritius) and Jacob Maliekal (South Africa) had not yet confirmed participation by Wednesday evening.
