Denis Onyango believes Uganda Cranes win against Cape Verde is very crucial in as far as qualifying for another Africa Cup of Nations is concerned.

Geoffrey Sserunkuma scored in Praia to give Mulitin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic charges all three points and start the campaign for the road to Cameroon 2019 on a bright note.

“It means a lot to us,” Onyango stated after the game. “You know in football when you win your first away game, it gives you an advantage over the group and we know we are unbeatable at home,” he added.

And if we get results like this away in Tanzania and also Lesotho, it will give us another Nations Cup.

The Cranes captain who made two crucial saves to keep the Cranes in the tie however says the excitement must be limited but take each game at a time.

For us we take one game at a time and you know it’s never easy. They (Cape Verde) can come to Uganda and give us a hard time but it was very important to start off on the front foot.

On the game itself, the Africa Player of the Year Based in Africa said it was very tough considering the fact that they only arrived in Praia 24 hours to the game.

It was a very tough game considering the fact that our team arrived yesterday from Senegal. Half of the team was here but the other team wasn’t around. The guys fought very hard and against a quality team like Cape Verde.

The visitors were on the back foot for most of the game but as long as they kept things tight at the back; they had belief according to the Mamelodi Sundowns first choice custodian.

We had to hold the pressure till the last whistle because we knew they were going to create chances but we also knew we were going to get a chance. There is a chance for every team no matter how you play and we got our chance and executed it.

The Group L fixture had to be postponed by 24 hours after the Cranes were stranded in Senegal on match day thanks to flight issues.

Onyango appreciated the sportsmanship from their opponents for allowing game be played the following day.

It was very important for us to play today (Sunday). We appreciate the sportsmanship between Cape Verde and us because we wanted the game to go on and enjoy the game of football.

We appreciate the sportsmanship but again it was out of our hands because we waited for our flight the whole day and thanks they appreciated to play today and the game was smooth and hope everyone enjoyed the game.

Uganda now tops the group with 3 points followed by Lesotho and Tanzania who have two points less while Cape Verde is at the base with no point after match day one.

The next games in the group will be played next year in March when Uganda host Tanzania while Cape Verde will play away to Lesotho.
