Deliverance Church Uganda edged a seven goal action against debutants Rhinos in the National Hockey League on Saturday in their opening game of the season.
Rhinos got off to a dream start, and they took an early lead through Brenda Kayinza in the fifth minute but Deliverance with defender Annet Namuwonge as the architect ran riot scoring four without seeing a reply from their opponents.
Team captain Vicky Akech found the equalized in the 21st minute, before Sanny Labol scoring the 2nd three minutes to recess and the 3rd eight minutes after the break.
And Sharon Oroma made it four for Deliverance who unlike Rhinos were playing their first game this season.
The new comers could have produced a dramatic comeback had time been their ally. They got their last two goals in the last five minutes with Gloria Achola scoring both.
While Deliverance conceded three times, their shirt 5, Namuwonge put up an outstanding performance. Her efforts were undermined by her partners in defense but she defended very well and many a time found time to attack.
While she didn’t get into the score sheet, she created two goals- Deliverance first and their last goal. She was very instrumental in her side’s victory.
Deliverance go third in the league, level on points with the top two Weatherhead and Wananchi but with an inferior goal difference
