CHAN 2018 Qualifiers:

  • Nigeria 2-0 Benin (Nigeria qualifies after 2-1 aggregate win)

The locally based Nigeria Super Eagles fought gallantly to eject Benin and qualify for the 2018 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament on Saturday.

The home-based team defeated the visitors by 2-1 on aggregate and 2-0 on the day at the Sani Abacha stadium in Kano State. Ali Rabiu and Kingsley Eduwo scored for the Super Eagles for the much desired victory.

Nigerian goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa saved Benin Republic’s would be precious away goal when he dived to save a penalty.

Nigeria thus joins 2009 champions Libya, Morocco, Uganda, Congo, Zambia and hosts Kenya as some of the confirmed countries that will play at the 2018 Championship.

Uganda Cranes fell 2-0 in Kigali to Rwanda, but still managed to qualify 3-2 on aggregate having won the first leg 3-0 at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Morocco beat Egypt 3-1 in Rabat on Friday to win the tie 4-2 overall.

Libya held Algeria to a 1-1 draw in Sfax to go through to the finals with a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Zambia overcame South Africa 2-0 to qualify 4-2 on aggregate while Congo Brazzaville needed a 1-1 result over nemesis side DR Congo to book their berth.

CHAN is a tournament only played for by the locally based players in the respective African domestic leagues.
