Kami Kabange (with the ball) scored 20 points for Patriots

Rwandan side Patriots started the 2017 Zone V Club championship with a commanding victory over Ethiopian side Hawassa City.

City Oilers old boy Kami Kabange showed glimpses of his quality to guide Henry Mwinuka’s side to a much needed victory in the tournament opener for the men.

The Ethiopians struggled to execute on offense while their opponents cruised in the first half.

Patriots ended the first ten minutes with an eight-point advantage (22-14) and shot for half a century at the close of first half business to lead 50-28.

The Aristide Mugabe led side started the second half with a 9-0 run to erase any hopes of a comeback for Hawassa.

Hawassa’s offense struggles stretched to the third quarter as they failed to score in the first five minutes of the frame while Patriots found the basket with ease.

At the end of the third period, the lead had doubled as Patriots led 83-39 to go into the last ten minutes of the game with just enough cushion.

Kabange and Steven Hagumintwari led the score charts with 20 points apiece while Olivier Shyaka and Lionel Hakizimana scored 16 each.

Kefeni Firafis Wagari and Brhane Leul Tafere contributed 13 points each in Hawassa’s losing effort.
