With just days to the 2018 National Rally Championship season opener, Omar Mayanja is looking forward to better things this year.
Mayanja and co-driver Hussein Mukuye had a good start to the 2017.
A change of fortune however meant they completed only two of the seven season rounds and finishing ninth overall on the NRC standings.
“We need to fix our finishing record. We know we have the speed and have been retiring out of podium positions.
“We want now to consolidate there. Even if it means slowing down a little to conserve the car to finish and score points,” says Mayanja.
Although Mayanja is the defending winner of the Mbarara Rally, he has little hopes to regain the victory in the west.
“In Mbarara we will get up to a slow start. We faltered in preparations. So our spares get here on a rally weekend and won’t be cleared out of customs.
“So our car will not be as renewed as we had wanted. But it’s in a good shape as seen on the last stages we did last year and we shall be competitive for a podium finish.”

Mayanja further shared his insights into the season.
“It’s going to be the most exciting season in years. With Jas, Susan, Ponsiano and Lumala in a fray. We have every former champion since 2005 except 2010.
“Also with equal machinery at the top, it will be a super competitive season,” he predicted.
Omar Mayanja will join other 39 crews for the Mbarara Rally this weekend.
