On a rainy evening at the Gitega stadium, overlying the hilly Gitega town, Tanzania won the 2018 CECAFA U-17 championship on Sunday, 29th April 2018 in Burundi.

The Tanzanian teenagers overcame horn of Africa nation, Somalia 2-0 in one sided encounter watched by the CAF President Ahmad Ahmad.

Edson Jeremiah and Jaffar Mtoo scored for the winning team.

Tanzania head coach Oscar Mirambo saluted his charges for the brave showing in the tournament as a bridge to prepare for the 2019 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations championship;

All our players are below 16, so it was tough for them to play against their compatriots. But we had to do it because we are looking forward for the next year’s Total U-17 Africa Cup of Nations. It was a good experience for us because we played against good teams like Kenya and Uganda. It is a good start for the long and tough journey awaiting us

Relatedly, CECAFA giants Uganda humbled Kenya 4-1 in the third place match on Saturday to take bronze medals.

Rogers Mugisha and Ibrhaim Juma each scored twice for Uganda.

Isaiah Abwel got the consolation for the Kenyans.

The Ugandan delegation returned home on Monday evening after a fortnight in Burundi.
