The local motorsport governing body FMU has reversed its decision and given a go-ahead for the Mbarara Rally.

On Thursday, FMU had reached a decision to cancel the Mbarara Rally after the organizing club; Mbarara Motor Club failed to effect the recommendations by the Ministry of Works and Transport.

The major issue was to follow the dates on which the rally was to run. Earlier requests indicated January 21-22. The organizing club instead sought to have its event run on January 21-23.

Safety was also a matter of concern.

However, in a turn of events, the MoWT issued a speed lift instrument on Friday afternoon also with adjustments on the dates granting the club its wish to organize the event on January 21-23.

“In regard to the compliance of Mbarara Motor Club in its preparations for the Rukaari – Lake Mburo Mbarara Rally 2022; and the new developments from the Ministry of Works and Transport that has granted a speed lift instrument, FMU is allowing the event to proceed,” reads a press release from the general secretary Leilah Mayanja.

The suspense had kept more than 25 crews in confusion, with some opting to drive back to the capital Kampala.

Now crews will compete over two days through eight stages covering a total competitive distance of 150 kilometers.
