Uganda U17 Women’s Football Team head coach Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi has named a provisional squad to start preparations for the forthcoming encounter against Ethiopia.
Kiyingi has on Thursday summoned a provisional squad of 50 players and the team will enter camp on Saturday.
This is in line with preparations for first round of the FIFA U17 Women World Cup Qualifiers, India 2022 against Ethiopia.
The first leg of this contest is slated for 4th March 2022 with the return leg coming in two weeks’ time in Adis Ababa.
Coach Kiyingi explains the reason behind summoning a big number indicating majority of the players summoned have been inactive.
‘The reason behind summoning such a big number is basically because these girls for more than 2 years have not been playing any competitive football so we mainly relied on the recommendation of the various coaches who we contacted seeking their help to share names of players they feel have the potential to play for the national team,” he said as quoted by FUFA.
“In the next two weeks my technical team is going to engage in a vigorous exercise of preparing these girls for the task at hand and for that I promise by the time we face Ethiopia we will be ready for the challenge.” Kiyingi added.
It should be noted that Uganda was on the verge of qualifying for the 2019 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup but the edition was cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
In the Qualifiers, Uganda had eliminated Ethiopia and Tanzania and was supposed to play Cameroon in the final qualifying stage.
