Alex Yiga celebrates a goal for the Uganda U-17 team in Ethiopia

Alex Yiga, 16, is a budding footballer who hails from a humble background in Busunjju, central Uganda.

Yiga is the first-born child in the family of five to Godfrey Temaliggwa (deceased) and Regina Nantume.

For his exceptional talent, the teenage was scouted to go for professional trials in Scotland at the historic Rangers Football Club, alongside two other young footballers.

He has boldly confessed that working hard will remain the key pillar as he yearns to attain greatness and success.

I am happy for the opportunity to have trials at Rangers Football Club in Scotland. I want to thank and appreciate all the people in my life who have helped me in one way or another to achieve this from my mother, brothers and sisters, all the coaches, KCCA Soccer Academy, Dynamic SS, Festoweb Sports Management and everybody, I am indeed humbled.

He yearns to impress during the trials, remain hardworking and composed at all times.

“I want to thank Rangers Football Club for the opportunity to have trials with them. This is a golden blessing in life that I want to utilize well. I will work so hard, remain disciplined and composed at all times” he adds.

Yiga was born on 22nd June 2006 as the first born in the family of five children. His football talent was identified at a young age, 6 which enabled him get scholarships in various schools.

He commenced the elementary education at Mukono Central primary school until P3.

In primary four, he transferred to Bishop West before sitting his Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) at St Juliana Primary School in P7.

For secondary school education, he was admitted at Rines Secondary School in S1.

He then moved to Dynamic Secondary School, Mukono in S2 until to date when is he in S5.

By the time Yiga left for Scotland, he was a regular member on the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Soccer Academy, a junior team that features in the FUFA Juniors League.

He also won bronze at the 2022 CECAFA U-17 football tournament with the Uganda Cubs (national U-17 team) in Ethiopia, scoring crucial goals and assisting in others.

Yiga’s mother (Regina Nantume) traveled with him at Entebbe International Airport and accorded the son parental blessings before he boarded the Emirates vessel to Scotland.

Nantume was also accompanied by his other young son, Alvin Ssenyonga as they bid farewell to Yiga.

Ssenyonga, 7, is also on a football bursary at Broadway Primary school, Mityana.

Yiga hailed his mother for the encouragement and support since he was young.

“I salute my mother in a special way. She has been encouraging me, pushing me to train and supporting me whenever she could. I am humbled. I will work hard and not disappoint her” Yiga vowed.

In Scotland, Yiga also traveled with Ivan Irinimbabazi (heading to Dundee United) as well as Hakim Kiwanuka (St Mirren).
