Overview:
Several golf clubs are affiliated to the Uganda Golf Union as Uganda Golf Club (Kampala), Entebbe Club, Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa (Kigo), Mehta (Lugazi), Palm Valley (Kakungulu Estate), Toro (Fort Portal), Tororo, Kilembe Mines (Kasese), Mary Simkins (Namulonge), Kinyara (Masindi), Jinja, Mbarara, Kabale, Lira, West Nile (Arua), Mbale, Soroti, Kihihi and others.
The Uganda Golf Union (UGU) has ushered in a new executive committee led by Dr.Jackson Were.
This development was confirmed during the body’s annual ordinary assembly on Thursday, 29th February 2024 held at the Uganda Golf Club, Kampala.
The medical doctor (Medical Microbiologist and head of Clinical Laboratories – Mulago National Refeeral Hospital) has been serving as vice president under the epoch of Moses Matisko since 2020.
“I am humbled to serve as the new president of Uganda Golf Union. I congragulate the other members of the executive. It is work in progress since I have been part of the previous executive” Dr. Were remarked in his maiden speech.
“Under my Presidency, the Union would continue to partner with government
in its effort to make golfing more meaningful to the communities and the nation at large. We will look at revisiting our strategies, we firstly need to ensure that we rally our members together so as to harness and grow trust between the stakeholders, clubs and members; and as a collective body, build trust with Government.” Dr. Were added.
The new executive also has Anthony Agaba as vice president, Fred Magala (Hon. Secretary), Andrew Atuhaire (Treasurer), Paul Habyarimana and Joseph Okudi (Committee members).
The tenure in office takes immediate effect and will climax by 2026.
Uganda Golf Union is mandated to administer the operations of golf in the country.
Several golf clubs are affiliated to the Uganda Golf Union as Uganda Golf Club (Kampala), Entebbe Club, Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa (Kigo), Mehta (Lugazi), Palm Valley (Kakungulu Estate), Toro (Fort Portal), Tororo, Kilembe Mines (Kasese), Mary Simkins (Namulonge), Kinyara (Masindi), Jinja, Mbarara, Kabale, Lira, West Nile (Arua), Mbale, Soroti, Kihihi and others.
Protection of the golf course land at the aforementioned courses is at the core for the new executive.
The new executive is also tasked to oversee the growth and development of golf sport from the grassroots to senior national teams for male and females through to the professionals.
More marketing and sponsorship lobbying, further spreading of the game to the country-side are other prime parameters that the new executive ought to expliot to the brim.
