Before Rugby 7s at the African Games kicked off, Day Two was not expected to be Uganda Men’s toughest. Their scheduled matches were against Burkina Faso and Ghana, both ranked much lower and less experienced.

However, the two West African countries nearly shot Uganda from the sky after taking off well on Day One. Uganda beat Burkina Faso, 24-14, but that score did not reflect how close the match was. The wake-up call they got from that match was much needed before they faced Ghana.

Like Burkina Faso before meeting Uganda, Ghana were still unbeaten in the tournament. They also had the home advantage. But Uganda composed themselves, played as a cohesive unit and took the victory.

They beat Ghana, 22-05, with all the points scored in the first half. Nobert Okeny clinched a brace before Philip Wokorach and Ian Munyani touched down. Wokorach converted one try.

Ghana’s attempted comeback was unsuccessful but they got a consolation try just before full-time.

Thus, Uganda Men are the solitary unbeaten team in the competition and remain firm favourites for the gold medal.
