From making a debut in the Western Uganda region, to new and fully closed stages puts this year’s Pearl of Africa rally in line of creating long lasting memories for rally enthusiasts.
The Pearl rally is the second round of Africa rally championship and run from 9-11th May in Mbarara district.
Alfred Mutanda; the Deputy Clerk of the Course says the offerings this year will be exciting for the spectators.
“We have made a very good route. And we have done everything possible as organisers to make it safe for everyone,” he told Kawowo Sports.
“What we have done is to make Pearl that will live in memories of everyone. These stages will give crews a feel of the Safari rally stages in some places,” he added.
Pearl rally will feature five stages. Four are all new with only one stage familiar to local crews.
“Kaguta, Ankole cow, Rukaari and Muhangi are all new stages to the crews. Moses Lumala stage was done this year but will be done in reverse form the Pearl. There are a lot of changes done to it.”
“Kaguta and Ankole cow are 100percent closed. While the other stages are open in some parts but very manageable safety wise,” said Mutanda.
Mutanda says the stages come in handy for spectators.
“We put a viewing point where fans will be able to watch a car for like six kilometers. And they can view two stages from the same area. This will help to reduce their movements,” he added.
Mutanda spots out Charles Muhangi stage as one that will call for experience and skills from drivers.
“While all other stages are smooth and fast, Charles Muhangi stage is the real rally. It is so technical giving everything. From tight, smooth, some rough in there. A very technical driver will enjoy it,” he said.
The Pearl of Africa rally will run for three days starting with the qualifying stage and shakedown on Thursday 8th May.
Rally will start proper on Friday with three stages including a super special stage at the Rukaari Resort.
It will cover a total competitive distance of 188.33kilometres.
