Philippe Consaletti on the golf course with youngsters in Fort Portal

Overview:

Training revolved around five foundational pillars: putting, around the green, full swing, scoring, and golf knowledge.

A remarkable milestone in junior golf development unfolded at Toro Golf Club this July, as internationally certified PGA professional Philippe Consaletti of France and Switzerland concluded a 12-day high-impact golf training camp in Fort Portal, Uganda.

Organized in partnership with Afriyea Golf Academy, the camp offered an elite development experience for junior golfers aged 12 to 16, all of whom arrived with handicaps ranging from 12 to 20.

Through a carefully curated training schedule, the young athletes underwent a transformative program that emphasized not only technical skills, but also course strategy, mental discipline, and a competitive mindset.

Innovative Training Through the U.S. Kids Golf Player Pathway

A unique aspect of the camp was the integration of the U.S. Kids Golf Player Pathway, a structured progression model commonly used with younger players, but successfully adapted for the teenage group.

Training revolved around five foundational pillars: putting, around the green, full swing, scoring, and golf knowledge.

Each player benefited from a customized development plan that included:

Daily drills aligned with Player Pathway checkpoints

Lessons on golf rules, course management, and decision-making

On-course performance tracking: FIR (Fairways in Regulation), GIR (Greens in Regulation), and putts per round

Mental game coaching and competitive mindset training

A Challenging Final Day of Assessment and Competition

The camp concluded with an action-packed final day, testing the players’ progress under real tournament pressure.

The assessment featured a 9-hole evaluation round, greenside bunker challenges, and two precision-based distance control drills at 40 and 80 yards.

One of the most engaging exercises was the “Five-Shot Scenario Challenge,” designed to simulate unpredictable short game situations with varying lies, slopes, and obstacles.

These challenges pushed players to think strategically and execute with confidence.

Rising Stars Emerge

The young golfers embraced the challenge, and many achieved personal bests during the final assessment.

The top six performers were recognized for their technical skill, tactical awareness, and overall improvement:

Richard Kirungi – Overall Winner – 120 points

Edward Muliisa – 1st Runner-Up – 97 points

Alfred Ayesiga – 2nd Runner-Up – 92 points

Easter Kemigisa – 91 points

Arafat Tumusiime – 81 points

Alex Byamukama – 79 points

Building a Promising Future for East African Junior Golf

Throughout the 12 days, participants not only sharpened their skills but also formed new friendships, embraced the discipline of training, and discovered the joy of structured improvement.

“It has been a privilege to work with these young athletes,” said Coach Philippe Consaletti. “Their passion, respect, and eagerness to grow were truly inspiring. Uganda has immense potential in golf, and I’m proud to contribute to shaping its future champions.”

“Hosting this camp at Toro Golf Club has been a great honor,” said Robert Mugabe, Captain of Toro Golf Club. “We are proud to see our course being used to nurture talent and provide opportunities for young Ugandans. This is what golf is all about growth, community, and legacy.”

“This camp is part of our long-term mission to nurture talent and open international pathways for African golfers,” said Isaiah Mwesige, Founder of Afriyea Golf Academy. “It’s not just about golf it’s about mentorship, discipline, and creating life-changing opportunities for youth in Uganda and beyond.”
