South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has made a case for African coaches arguing that they should be given as much support as their counterparts.

The Belgian is the last non-African coach to win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017 with Cameroon.

Since then, locals Djamal Belmadi (Algeria 2019), Aliou Cisse (Senegal 2021) and Emerse Fae (2023) have all triumphed with their respective national teams.

“They say you never praised in your own land. And is not only in Africa but also in Europe. People always say that foreign coaches are better than local coaches,” Broos started when asked about what he thinks of African coaches and why they are less trusted.

“Maybe also because foreign coaches come with success. But I think sometimes you have to give chance to the local coaches, gives them support and time to achieve and prove themselves. Who said that African coaches are worse than others? I don’t know.

“But I think they (local coaches) need to be given time and patience to build the team and, in the past, they have given more time and resources to the foreign coaches than the locals and this should also be given to them and they have shown they are good.”

In the round of 16, only Miguel Gamondi (Argentina), Sebastien Desabre (DR Congo), South Africa (Hugo Broos) and Benin (Gernot Rohr) are non-African coaches.
