Uganda’s national men’s basketball team, the Silverbacks, has finalised its 12-man roster ahead of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers.

Ian Duncan Lubwama, a standout guard for the JT Jaguars, has been handed the final slot to complete the squad.

While eleven players had previously been confirmed, the team was waiting to fill the remaining vacancy before relocating for their training camp.

Silverbacks Team Manager Albert Ahabwe confirmed that Lubwama was the coaching staff’s choice to round out the group.

Lubwama’s inclusion comes as little surprise to those following the local league. Known for his leadership at the JT Jaguars, he offers a versatile skill set

His elite ball handling provides stability in the backcourt under pressure. His scoring depth makes him a reliable offensive threat who can create his own shot, and his leadership brings a veteran presence to the national team.

The Silverbacks face a daunting task in their qualifying group, where they are set to battle African basketball powerhouses Mali, Angola, and Egypt.

Following a challenging performance in the 2025 AfroBasket Championship, the team is under pressure to pull up its socks and regain its competitive edge on the continental stage.

The stakes are high because out of the 16 African nations competing in the qualifiers, only five will secure a ticket to the 2027 World Cup in Qatar.
