Result: Mbarara City 2-1 Blacks Power
Mbarara City secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Blacks Power in the Uganda Premier League encounter at Rwamwanja Stadium on Sunday.
The hosts started on the front foot, searching for an early breakthrough, with Ian Amanya dictating play in the middle of the park.
Blacks Power goalkeeper Bashir Ssekagya was called into action early and proved equal to the task, keeping Mbarara City at bay.
Mbarara City eventually took the lead through Rogers Mugisha in the 28th minute, with the forward finishing off Eric Tumwine’s delivery.
Tumwine then doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 40th minute, rising to powerfully head home Mugisha’s corner kick.
Blacks Power came out strongly after the break and pulled one back five minutes into the second half through Innocent Maduka, who finished spectacularly to give the visitors hope of a comeback.
The visitors pushed for an equaliser, with Tumwine attempting to extend their threat from distance, but Mbarara City goalkeeper Michael Okiria calmly collected the effort.
Blacks Power continued to search for a way back into the contest, with Maduka appearing to have been fouled inside the penalty area in the 70th minute. However, the centre referee waved play on.
Three minutes later, Patrick Oonyu tapped home from close range, but the goal was ruled out after the assistant referee raised the flag for offside.
Mbarara City held on to claim their first victory of the campaign, moving to 14th place with five points. Blacks Power remain fifth with nine points from six matches.
