2012 National Open Championship winner Alfred ‘Black Sheep’ Gumikiriza is desperately seeking for another title.
The year after he won, Gumikiriza lost in the finals to Fahad Ssewankambo in nail biting fashion. It was the same year (2013) that the car grand prize was introduced.
So what haunts the Hotpool club and national team player is the inability to win the car.
At this year’s championship, Gumikiriza starts against Tonny Kasozi in round one, a battle on the lower chart of the menu.
He believes it is time to win again;
I have not taken this year lightly. In fact, for the past week, I have been in residential training with Joker and Habib Ssebugizi.
In some of the other opening round games, defending champion Sula Matovu faces Ashraf Kinene, Solomon Nkwakira will face Arthur Amanya as Ibrahim Sejjemba locks horns with Joseph Mutaawe.
The talented deaf player Ivan Kanyesigye kick starts with Allan Nsubuga as Abubaker Nakabale takes on multiple winner Jonan Turigye.
Attacking gem Simon “Computer” Lubulwa will battle Jackson Kaweesi, Walter Muntu with William Busingye, Dennis Ongom against Abdul Ganny and the mouth watering clash between Mansoor Bwanika and Wasswa Kayiiya.
A total 128 players will play at the day long event whose winner will drive home a brand new Toyota Altezza, pocket Shs5M and championship pool table.
