Against Ghana, Shakira Bako Agarile and Diana Tiperu top scored for team Uganda with five goals apiece whilst Ghana's Annobil Alfreda scored a game high nine goals.

13th African Games (Handball Women):

Uganda women handball team finished fifth at the 13th African Games in Ghana, West Africa.

The development comes after Uganda edged hosts Ghana 30-28 in a closely contested encounter at the Borteyman sports complex on Thursday evening.

This was during the 5th/6th placement game at the championship.

Shakira Bako Agarile and Diana Tiperu top scored for team Uganda with five goals apiece.

The quartet of Diana Nakamya, Jesca Nakamaanya, Lillian Achola and Barbra Nantume each had four goals to their personal tally on the evening.

Patricia Arago scored thrice and Dorren Ondora had one strike.

For Ghana, Annobil Alfreda scored a game high nine goals, supplemented by Diana Akumasi and Joyce Mahama with three goals apiece. Moses Kabah Barbara and Fatima Seidu contributed two goals each.

The game was officiated by Mostafa Hussein and Kedis A. Moustafa from Egypt.

Uganda head coach Aziz Yakoub was grateful for the overall performance at this championship.

“Finishing fourth is respectable. We return home with our heads up” Aziz stated.

“This is Uganda’s best ever finish on a continental level. We shall fight harder and train more to improve in next tournaments” he added.

Uganda recorded two wins (over Mali and Ghana), one loss (to Cameroon) and a draw to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

DRC made it to the final and will face Angola in a fierce battle for gold.

For the men, it is DRC and Egypt fighting for gold and silver.

By Thursday evening, Uganda had fetched as many as 17 medals. Of these are 4 gold, 5 silver and 8 bronze.
